TNG 13.x Upgrade

Installation Instructions

1. Back up settings and custom files, other preparation.   |   Show instructions

   If you haven't done so lately, please make a backup of the following important files before proceeding (you might need them later, even if nothing goes wrong here):

   • config.php (general settings)
   • *footer.php (custom footer)
   • importconfig.php (import settings)
   • *index.php (your home page!)
   • logconfig.php (log settings)
   • mapconfig.php (map settings)
   • meta.php (custom meta data & scripting)
   • mmconfig.php (mod manager settings)
   • *css/mytngstyle.css (style sheet)
   • pedconfig.php (pedigree settings)
   • templateconfig.php (template settings)
   • *topmenu.php (custom header)

   *A note on the custom header, footer, home page and mytngstyle.css stylesheet: If you're using a template, remember that the files you'll want to back up are the ones in the templates/template# folder (where # is the template number). If you never customized these files directly, then you don't actually need to back them up.

   You might also want to back up your database tables (using Admin/Utilities), your table structure (same place), and any TNG files that you may have altered, although the risk for data loss during this upgrade is very minimal.

   
   

2. Uninstall all mods.   |   Show instructions

   If you previously installed any mods with the Mod Manager, uninstall all of them before proceeding with the upgrade.

   1. in Admin > Mod Manager, select Installed and click the Go button
   2. on the Installed selection screen, click the Select All button and then click the Uninstall button
   3. Select Partially Installed and click the Go button
   4. on the Partially Installed selection screen, click the Select All button and then click the Clean Up button
   5. When you return to the Mod List, the All mods screen should show all the mods as Ok to Install or Cannot Install
   6. If any mods cannot be reinstalled, check here for updates: https://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Mods_for_TNG_v13

   When the upgrade is complete, you may reinstall if needed. Look for updated versions of any that are not ready to be immediately reinstalled.

3. Upload the files and folders.   |   Show instructions

   Upload all the files and folders (except the "templates" folder, which will be covered later) to the main TNG area on your web site. For many of you, the main TNG area will be the "public_html" folder. Be sure to overwrite existing files that have the same names. Note: The folders contained in this zip file do not contain all of the files that are supposed to be in the same folders on your site. Only files that have changed since the last release are included. If your upload program will erase the unchanged files when you upload these smaller folders with the same names, then be sure to merge the folders instead.

4. Templates   |   Show instructions

   Most people: If you're using a template and haven't changed any of the actual template files, or if you're not using a template at all (but might in the future), then upload the entire templates folder included in this upgrade.

   A few of you: If you have altered any of the files in your template folder, then upload everything in the templates folder that you haven't changed (all the templates you're not using, and all the files from your template that you haven't touched). You should then consider merging your changes into the remaining files.

5. Clear your cache.   |   Show instructions

   It isn't always necessary, but if things aren't working properly after the upgrade, it could just be that some of the old files or pages are still stuck in your browser cache. Before asking for help, please clear your cache and check your results again. The update should be complete. You did it! If anything doesn't look right, please try the following before asking for support:

1. Review all the instructions again. Make sure you didn't miss something!
2. Try clearing your browser cache again, then refresh the page.
3. Repeat any step(s) you think you may have missed. You can't break anything by doing it again.
