    Notes:

Christian Wenger may have been ordained a Mennonite Preacher whileliving in the Palatinate. In 1749 he was listed listed as the"Vorsteher" among teh Mennonite preachers and deacons in the Groffdalemennonite congregation, which indicates that he had seniority inlength of service.

He arrived in Philadelphia on September 30, 1727 aboard the shipMolly. Aboard the ship was a young lady named Eve Graybill who beamehis wife shortly after their arrival in America. It is interesting tospeculate whether they became romantically interested in each otherprior to leaving Germany or whether their romance began on the longsea voyage.

The original stone house built by Christian is still standing. Theoriginal stone structure was covered by wweatherboarding by hisgrandson and thus preserved. The premises were continuously owned bydescendants of Christian Wenger until 1964. Years ago, I was inLancaster County taking pictures of the house which was occupied atthat time by an Amish family. I received permission from the man ofthe house who said I could take the photographs but be sure not to getany of his family in the picture. I commenced to take the photographs, when a rather robust Amish lady came out of the house and told me inno uncertain terms to get back to road where I belonged. Apparentlyshe thought I was tourist violating their privacy. After explainingthat her husband had given me permission, she apologized and calmeddown.

Christian and Eve Wenger are buried in the backmost row of ofmtheCemetery of the Groffdale Mennonite Church.
