    • Ira Perry Hinman (the 2nd) was born to Elizabeth Katherine Zentner & Charles Eugene Hinman in Bellevue, Iowa on 13 Oct, 1890. He was their first son but they had two older daughters, Lydia Wheeler Hinman and Blanche Hinman. Ira grew up in an almost ideal setting, along the MIssissippi, living a life almost like a combination Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. His father not only invented practical machinery but was trying to discover "perpetual motion" machine that would make him a millionaire. He was a near genius in his mechanical abilities, according to his son and grandson who had many gifts of their own for discovery and inventing mechanical solutions. Charles also had an itchy foot that did not like having to stay put in one place. He built a number of engines for boats, having discovered that a row of in-line engines could be set up to run off kerosine fumes poured over cordite. One of the boats, for which he was called the Mechanic, was the "Judgey" which he and the owner raced up and down the Mississippi River. Any who knew Charlie very well, admitted that he never really grew up, but remained like a child in being able to play with his "toys." He took one of the boats down the Mississippi River to New Orleans where he and his croneys sold it and had a great time in N.O. While such a man is an interesting character he can also be an irresponsible parent. No doubt that Ira Perry recognized early that he had both.

      Yet the boy and man were different than his father's. The son who stuck his nose a lot closer to the grindstone and cared a lot more about his family.

      In 1908, while still in high school, Charles took his son to San Francisco after the big earthquake. He came back to Bellevue, completed H.S. and then went to Chicago to find his first job. He went to work in 1911 for Illinois Seed as dock handler. When they advertised in paper for high school graduate to work in the office, Ira Perry answered the ad and was hired. He soon worked his wasy up from $9.00 a week to making $11.00. By then he had met Florence Montgomery on the street car and on 12 June 1912 they were married.
      By the time Ira P. was thirty they built a home in the Chicago west side. In 1920 they moved to Iowa when Ira P. went to work for Harvey Roberts Seed Co. He was both a seed buyer, salesman and seed cleaner who could invent and build new kinds of seed cleaning equipment. This put him much in demand as he could know how to clean lots of seed which he purchased and then knew to whom he could sell it in car load lots. He went to work for Albert Dickenson Seed Co. in Minneapolis, MN in 1927. He was making a salary of over $1000.00 a month which a that time was cnsidered exceptionally good. The family had also sold the church and parsonage they owned in Postville so would appear they were well fixed for that time.
      Florence was in ill health after the birth of daughter Patricia. This and perhaps other things led to Ira Perry having an affair in Bemidji, MN which because of a letter was discovered by Florence. This completely changed her attitude about life and feelings for her family and husband. She was completely irrational for a number of years. In being so, she even managed to get her husband fired in the middle of the depression from Minneapolis Seed Co. In so doing, Ira went to work in 1932 for the Barzen Seed Company in Theif River Falls, MN. He only stayed for a few years and then decided to go into business for himself. On about $300.00 he started buying seed, rented space in a warehouse and began cleaning seed. In 1937, the seed plant caught fire and burned to the ground. It took months to prove a loss and be able to pay his debts and get back into operation again. This time at 1610 Central Ave. He was well on the road to financial recovery when he fell after a light snow and bumped the back of his head on the steps. He went down town and was not seen again for five weeks. It was a case of partial abnesia so he thought he was living in period five years or so earlier. Again he was able to recover his health and return to business on a larger scale than ever. He sold out and retired in 1955. Eleven days after his retirement, he entered Swedish Hospital for surgery to remove polyps in his intestines. Upon doing a biopsy, it was found that some were malignant so his colon was removed. After five days, of poor recovery as he kept pulling out tubes in his nose, he died as they tried to place tubes back in. The autopsy later showed that there were still extensive malignant polyps in his intestines so his last few months would have meant either more surgery or dying within six months from intestinal cancer which had taken his father twenty five years earlier.
      He is remembered most lovingly by those of us still living in 1994, nearly forty years after his death. We still remember his stories, his ability to cook a wonderful meal, his understanding and appreciation of other people and his gift for making problems seem less threatning.
