General Andrew Pickens was raised in the Waxhaw settlement in South Carolina then to Alabama and Tennessee. He led his soldiers during the American Revolutionary. On August 28, 1811 General Andrew Pickens, of Colonial and Revolutionary War fame wrote "Light Horse Harry Lee." Andrew's father and mother came from Ireland.

      Fort Independence

This fort is mentioned in the pension application of Andrew, William, William Gabriel also in Draper interview with Andrew Pickens. It also is mentioned in the pension of numerous other men who had some experience there. Both tradition and its site indicate that it was built on Pickens Land. John and Gabriel Pickens obtained grants on Great Rocky Creek in Granville , South Carolina in 1765.

The grants show that they joined each other and lands of Matthew Gillespie. The old site is very near Lowndesville, western Abbeville, South Carolina. The first settlers felt the necessity for this fort as protection against the indians, as they ever on the, then extreme frontier.

Before young Andrew grew to manhood his father moved to Virginia from there to the Waxhaw Settlement in Lancaster County, South Carolina. At the age of 21 years he joined an expedition to put down an indian uprising and he was made captain. He soon became a leader among the settlers.
