"Sacred to the memory of Hugh Montgomery who was born at Crofthead parish of Urr and died at Banks 20th September 1872, also of Jane, his daughter, who died at Barstibly, parish of Tongland 13th March 1861 aged 7 years, also of Jean Barbour, widow of the above Hugh Montgomery who was born at BOGUE in the parish of DALRY 16th December 1823 and died at Dee Bank Kirkcudbright 18th December 1897, also Mary Kate daughter of the above Hugh Montgomery born at Banks 18th Sept 1864 died at Kirkcudbright 22nd Sept 1924" According to Bertha Brown(Betty Gerdes), Hugh Montgomery was involved in raising Jane Welsh Montgomery and her brother Andrew after the death of their mother. This however was disputed by Jenny Mundell, a former maid in the household.
